Hey Everyone,
Well after a night of drinking (bad on me) I am sitting in the SU office, pondering what my first project once I get into office is going to be. I have a lot of homwork to catch up on, so that is a priority now until May, although it doesn't carry the same weight or interest as Student Union politics. The results are in, and I won by quite a few. However, I do give credit to Mr. Barski for engaging students in politics. Our voter turnout is sooo high, maybe it will surpass the Federal election turnout rate. Last night had to be one of the most interesting times of my life. Never have I had people buy me drinks like they did, say congrats, or even recognize me. Generally I am a fairly humble person, but my head swelled a little bit tonight, and I was pretty excited. One of the greatest things about this race, is there were some people that I met that ended up being great people. I think that at the end of the day, there were some great candidates and it is too bad some people lost. That is politics. At this point in my life, before I become chained to the desk of the VPA, I am going to take some time to focus on my studies and finish my degree. There are lots of papers to be written. If I were to add up the pages it would be scary... So I won't.
So Here is thanks to all the candidates...
I have a lot of respect for soo many of the candidates, including some on slates. In the end the students decided and we have our new council, which I am extremely proud and honored to be apart of. I look forward to being your 62nd Vice President, Academic.

OH AND I GOT ELECTED AND NOT ACCLAIMED! I AM A ORCHID AND NOT A CACTUS! AND I AM THE BEST VPA!

So TODAY is voting day # 2. Please go out there and vote for an independent candidate. We want a diverse SU, with people that can hold their own. And please vote for a VPA, that will get the job done and who knows their stuff. That leaves you with me. Thanks to everyone who helped me out.

Here is something I posted on a gauntlet comment. I am looking forward to the coming week. I am not out for a three ringed circus, I am here to talk to students, put up my posters, and get people out to vote. I don't have gimmickie prizes, all I have is time to talk to each electorate that wishes to. I will try my best next year, as I have this year. I hope that people will respect this quality, and vote for me. In the end I have given much of my life over the past two years (four if you count my committee work) to this organization. I hope to continue for one more year or so.
I would like to thank the Gauntlet for taking the time to care about the elections. Without their coverage, our work as candidates would be extremely difficult. While I don't always agree with their written words, and sometimes their words are harsh, within this supplement, they took the time to really look at all candidates. We each had the time to pitch our ideas, our desires, and our goals.
I encourage every person to seek out candidates individually. Come talk to us, we will be roaming the halls for hours on end over the next coming week. Each and every candidate has something to offer students, and it is up to you to make your own decision. Take a chance on someone who shows convinction, dedication, and a willingness to take office.
Please read the Gauntlet. Read our platforms and read the candidate reviews. Read them with a discerning eye, but respect that many of these individuals have spent almost as many hours as us candidates reviewing issues, discussing ideas, and analyzing political strategy.
All I ask of each and every student, is engage in the exercise of democracy by voting. Yes, the SU at best is a small microcosom of real time politics, but it is a government and we have a duty to represent.

Okay so here is another update:
Accessibility:
Of course this is upsetting to me. I think that the university in its attempts to diversify the undergraduate population according to the Academic Plan and improve the quality of the student at the U of C is ridiculous when it is only indicator is improving the entering frosh GPA. I think that the University needs to commit to finding well rounded and intelligent students, not just those who are at the top of the class. The cohort that makes up my frosh peers would be somewhat different then those students coming in five or ten years. Accessibility is something the university said up until now it has been the perfect and responsible citizen by receiving most of the influx of students from Alberta. More so then any other institution. What can we do about accessibility in Calgary, raise awareness, increase provincial funding, vote against policies that only cater to either the grad student or the elite undergrad. Top down admission is brutal -I now that sounds so unacademic. It is the instrument that allows this University to engage in this very selective process. Until the enrollment cap is lifted or their is a commitment by the University to educate Calgarians of all types, the U of C is moving away from a regional school that serves the surrounding campus, to an elitist wannabe. Last year in meetings with the Undergraduate Programs Office Committee I spoke of the negative effects that top down admission could have. I voted against it in GFC. In the end we are stuck with it. All we can do now, is lobby the government to increase funding so that more seats become available to entering students. I hope that helps
It isn't a solution Jen, but it is where I stand on the issue.
For all those of you who attended the forum yesterday, I kicked some VPA butt! I was pretty proud of myself. Despite several criticisms and tough questions, I put on a smile and got the job done. Yeah on me! Hope you all come out and listen to CJSW on Thursday, I will be speaking I think at 6 or 6:30. My first time on the air, oh yeah!
